Where Can You Roll? Golf Cart & LSV Friendly Roads In Dare County

• Low-speed vehicles differ from a standard golf cart because they are in compliance with NC laws to make them legal to drive on streets that are 35 mph or less.

• A low-speed vehicle must be equipped with headlamps, stop lamps, turn signal lamps, tail lamps, seat belts, plus more safety equipment. To see the whole list check the NCDOT LSV brochure.

• Low-speed vehicles and their drivers must be registered and insured.

• NCDOT may prohibit low-speed vehicles from traveling on any roadway in the interest of public safety.

• Be mindful of areas that have seasonal speed limit changes and follow the rules based on the posted speed limit.

State Laws

  • A low-speed vehicle may be operated only on streets and highways where the posted speed limit is 35 miles per hour or less.
  • A low-speed vehicle may cross a road or street with a speed limit exceeding 35 mph perpendicular at an intersection.
  • A low-speed vehicle shall be registered and insured in accordance with G.S. 20-50 and G.S. 20-309.
  • A low-speed vehicle shall be equipped with headlamps, stop lamps, turn signal lamps, tail lamps, reflex reflectors, parking brakes, rearview mirrors, windshields, windshield wipers, speedometer, seat belts, and a vehicle identification number.

Manteo

  • All LSV's must follow state laws above.
  • Golf Carts are not permitted on road ways in Manteo.
